Halfgroat of Elizabeth I

This hammered silver coin was unearthed by Derek Henderson during a detecting outing in Lincolnshire. It’s obviously a coin of Elizabeth I but Derek wasn’t sure of the denomination so I was asked for a full ID and a valuation.

The coin measures 20mm in diameter so it must be a halfgroat. On both sides the mint mark isn’t clear but it is most likely to be a martlet, which dates the coin to 1560-61.

Valuation

Derek’s find would grade Fair to Fine but the flan looks to be uneven so my highest valuation figure would be £20.
