Half noble of Edward III

This is the last coin from a group that came in from Darren Clarke. It’s hammered gold so it belongs to a category sought after by every detecting enthusiast.

The coin is a half noble of Edward III but pinning it down proved to be problematic. At first sight it looks to be in very good condition but look closer and much of the detail is indistinct. The legends, in particular, do not show up at all well.

Valuation

The coin has a particularly significant plus point: it is hammered gold. After pointing out negative points in regard to its state of preservation, I’d set a pre-sale auction estimate at £800-1,000. Provided that potential bidders were not too choosy, I would not be surprised if it broke through the upper estimate.
