Ancient British silver unit of the Catuvellauni

Roger Paul said this coin and another one turned up on the 24th of September. It was described by Roger as “. . . a bit dark but otherwise in good condition”.

The coin is an Ancient British silver unit. It was struck by the Catuvellauni and is listed in Ancient British Coins as the Whaddon Goat type. On the obverse is a head with coiled hair facing left. On the reverse, facing right, is an ainulate goat with a ring and pellet above and below.

Valuation

ABC lists silver units of this type as very rare and I’d grade this example as Fine+. If I was cataloguing it for sale at auction I would set the pre-sale estimate at £160-200.
