Half guinea of George III

This milled gold coin was sent in by Peter Vernon, who asked if I would provide a valuation on it. However, the coin, a half guinea, was recently unearthed not by Peter but by one of his detecting colleagues.

On the obverse is the laureate head of George III and on the reverse a crowned shield of arms with the date – 1788 – below it. There are scuffs across the chin and neck of King George but the coin is otherwise in Fine condition.

Valuation

The scuffs would put off some collectors but to someone who isn’t too choosey about the state of preservation this half guinea shouldn’t be worth any less than £180.
