Groat of Mary Tudor

The detectorist who found this coin asked to remain anonymous. I was told that he had no intention of selling it but he wondered what the retail price would be.

This find is a groat of Mary Tudor. Examples of this coin turn up regularly as detecting finds but most are not in good condition. This specimen cannot have been in circulation for long for its state of preservation is well above average.

Valuation

Queen Mary’s face is a bit weak but the coin is otherwise in about VF condition. The retail price would depend on who was selling it and where they are based. A top London dealer who probably charge £500 for it but a dealer in the provinces with a smaller client base would charge around £325 for it.
