Groat of Edward IV

A detectorist signing himself as Gary had already identified this coin as a groat of Edward IV. However, he had difficulty pinning it down to a type so he asked for my opinion.

This groat was struck at London during the light coinage of the first reign of Edward IV.  On the obverse there are quatrefoils by the king’s neck and the mint mark on both sides is a rose. In the inner legend on the reverse there is an extra pellet in the trio situated in the LOn quarter.

This isn’t a rare coin and the extra pellet is a feature seen on many of the groats with mint mark rose. In the Standard Catalogue the type is listed as number 2000.

Gary’s coin would grade about VF but discoloration to both sides reduces it eye appeal. However, it should still be of interest to specialist in hammered silver coins.
