Groat of Edward IV

Bill Wiggins said this coin was unearthed on the 30th of September. He described it as being heavily clipped and he thought it was a groat of Edward III.

The coin is a groat of London but it was struck during the light coinage of the first reign of Edward IV. It has quatrefoils by the king’s neck and mint mark crown on both sides. In the Standard Catalogue the generic type is listed as number 2000.

Valuation

The obverse has been struck off centre and there is a closed crack in the edge but this side is otherwise in good Fine condition. The reverse is slightly better. It might be clipped but it could be full weight and struck on a flan too small for the dies. As it stands, I would price this groat at £60.
