Groat of Edward III
The finder of this coin, Tony Quin, said it turned up on 12 August. Tony believed it is a groat of Edward III but wanted further details.
Firstly, this is a London groat of Edward III. The initial mark on both sides is a cross with ends that curve inwards and the punctuation marks are annulets. On the reverse there is an annulet in the DON quarter and a pellet between each letter of TAS (T.A.S). All this adds up to the coin being an example of Edward III series Gf.
Tony’s coin is slightly short of flan but is otherwise in about VF condition. It’s a nice looking coin and would be a welcome addition to any collection of detecting finds.
