Gold Staters
These two Ancient British coins are part of a hoard of nine gold staters discovered in 2022. The hoard was reported under the Treasure Act but has now been disclaimed. It was found by members of a club, whose Chairman requested my opinion on this find but said that both he and his club wished to remain anonymous.
Stater of the Regni and Atrebates
The first stater is a coin of the Regni and Atrebates.Â
On the obverse is a vine leaf with VI to the left and RI to the right, which refers to Verica. On the reverse is a mounted warrior facing right with C behind, O in front and F (only partly visible) below; the letters refer to Commios, who was the father of Verica.
In Ancient British Coins it is listed as number 1193 as the Verica Vine Leaf Viri type . This specimen would grade good VF but has a few striking cracks in the edge. It’s not a particularly scarce coin but is quite attractive and to a collector of Ancient British staters it should be worth £1,800.
Stater of the Dobunni
Coin number two is a gold stater of the Dobunni.
On the obverse is a tree with a pellet base and nothing else. On the reverse is a stylised horse facing right, with ANTED above and OV behind; there would be RIC before OV but this doesn’t show up.
In Ancient British Coins this is listed as number 2066 as the Anted Rig type. This is similar to the last stater in that it is attractive but not particularly scarce. It would grade it as VF and my price to a collector would be £1,500.
