Gold stater of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes

Rob Warwick said he unearthed this find 40 years since and it is still the most beautiful and important thing he has ever found. It is now in the possession of a farmer, who paid £500 for it. Rob wondered what it might be worth today.

The find is an Ancient British gold starter. On the obverse there is a corn ear flanked by CA M[V] and with an ornate tie at the base. There is a rearing horse facing right on the obverse, with a branch above and CVNO below. This stater is a coin of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes, with an abbreviated form of Camulodunon on the obverse and Cunobelinus on the reverse.

In Ancient British Coins the coin is listed as the Conobelinus Classic type as number 2798 and in the Standard Catalogue it is number 288.

Valuation

This is a magnificent gold stater, which would grade EF for the period. It has gorgeous toning and really great eye appeal. It is certainly one of the best examples I have seen of the type and to a keen collector it shouldn’t be worth any less than £2,500.
