Gold stater of the Catuvellauni

The finder of this Ancient British gold coin wished to remain anonymous. However, he asked for a valuation in order to be able to pass on a figure to the owner of the land on which the coin was found.

The coin weighs 6 grams, it is 15mm in diameter and is a gold stater of the Catuvellauni. On the obverse are crossed wreaths, one of which is curved, with opposed crescents in the centre and faces in the angles. There is a right-facing horse on the reverse, with a bucranium and solar motif above and a ring and a hook-like-object below.

In Ancient British Coins staters like this one are listed as the Tasciovanos Hidden Faces type (number 2553). This type is said to have TASCIAVAN at the top of the reverse but it shows up neither on this coin nor the example illustrated in ABC.

Valuation

A coin of the same type was sold at auction recently and the hammer price was £1,700. That specimen was in good VF condition, which is a higher grade that the coin illustrated here. On the latter the obverse has been struck well off centre, on the reverse the horse is flat on the high points and overall I would grade it as near VF. In its present condition I would suggest that between a willing buyer and a willing seller a fair price would be £1,200.
