Follis of Galerius
Mike Ruczynski sent in the images of this 25mm in diameter Roman coin but it was found a few weeks since by his brother, John. Mike asked me to let him have a detailed ID and a valuation.
The coin is a billon follis with a laureate and draped bust on the obverse and a legend that reads IMP MAXIMIANVS P F AVG. On the reverse the standing figure of Genius is accompanied by a legend reading GENIO POP ROM. There is no mint mark below Genius but this type is said by Sear to have been struck at London.
This follis was struck for Galerius as Augustus (AD 305-11). Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus was known as Maximinus before rising to imperial rank. David Sear lists his coins under Galerius Maximian. All this can certainly be confusing to anyone not familiar with Roman history and coins.
Valuation
In volume IV id David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values this type is listed as number 14526 and is dated to AD 307. The head of Genius on the reverse is weak but the coin is otherwise in VF condition so my price range would be £30-40.
