Farthing of Edward III

A detectorist named Marcin sent in the images of this hammered silver coin, which measures only 11mm in diameter. Marcin said: “I think it is a penny farthing.”

On the obverse is a head facing forward and a legend reading +EDWARDVS ANG. On the reverse there are three pellets in two angles and the head of a bear in the other two, together with a legend reading VIL LAB ERV ICI.

The preceding information adds up to this coin being a first coinage farthing of Edward III, which was struck at Berwick when it was under English control. In the Standard Catalogue this coin is listed as number 1539.

Valuation

This is a rare coin, which would grade about VF so it is well above average for the type. In its present condition my price range would be £250-300.
