Ancient British silver unit of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes

The coin pictured here is from the group that came in from Darren Clarke for IDs and valuations.

The coin is an Ancient British silver unit of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes. On the obverse is a head facing right and a legend reading CVNOBEL in front and INVS behind the head. On the reverse is a griffin facing left, with a trefoil of pellets above and CAMV below.

The coin is an example of the Cunobelinus Leaping Griffin type. In Ancient British Coins it is listed as number 2909 and in the Standard Catalogue it is number 310.

Valuation

The type is listed in ABC as being excessively rare but today the number on record is into two figures. On this example the obvers has been struck off centre and the edge is irregular but the coin is otherwise in about VF condition. A very similar example was sold at auction in London during 2024 and the hammer price was £240.  I’d have expected it to sell for more but the bidders seem to have believed that £240 was high enough.
