Denarius of Septimius Severus

Rob Warwick said this coin was unearthed a while back and he now needs a full ID and a valuation.

Rob’s find is a denarius of Septimius Severus, whose dates are AD 193 to 211. Around the laureate head of the emperor on the obverse is a legend reading SEVERVS AVG PART MAX. On the reverse the hovering figure of Victory holds an open wreath over a shield set on a base and if the whole of the legend on this side could be seen then it would read P M TR P VIII COS II P P.

In volume II of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values denarii of this type are listed as number 6333. They were struck at Rome during AD 200.

Valuation

This denarius would grade near VF but there is a weak area behind Victory on the reverse. Rather than being due to circulation wear this defect was probably due to the thickness of the flan being uneven. Despite the defect, this is still a reasonably attractive coin, which should be worth around £40 to a collector.
