Billon follis of Severus II
This 28mm diameter Roman coin was sent in by Mike Ruczynski with a request for it to be identified and valued. On both sides the legend has weak areas but I will describe them as if everything shows up.
The coin is a billon follis, which was struck for Severus II when he was Caesar under Constantius I (May AD 305 to July 306). On the obverse is a laureate bust of Severus and a legend reading FL VAL SEVERVS NOB C. On the reverse the standing figure of Genius holds in one hand a patera over an altar, and in the other hand a cornucopia. There is a star behind Genius and below are the mint letters for Lugdunum (PLG). The legend on the reverse reads GENIO POPVLI ROMANI.
In volume IV of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values this type is not listed. I traced dozens of similar coins of Severus II but only one with the same die paring as the coin sent in by Mike.
Valuation
As already mentioned, the legend on both sides is weak in places but the coin is otherwise in about VF condition. My price range would be £50-70.
