Denarius of Marcus Aurelius

This is another coin from the group sent in by someone signing herself as Diane.

It’s another denarius, this one being a coin of Marcus Aurelius, which was struck when he was Caesar under Antoninus Pius. On the obverse the legend reads AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F around the bare head of M Aurelius. On the reverse the standing figure of Honos holds a branch and a cornucopia and the legend on this side reads COS II.

In volume II of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values the exact type isn’t listed but it is number 429a in Roman Imperial Coinage and dates to AD 145-47.

Valuation

The coin isn’t a rarity but it has eye appeal and would grade good VF. In its present condition a likely auction estimate would be £50-70.
