Denarius of Julia Maesa
This Roman denarius came in from Rob Warwick. It’s a recent find and Rob wanted a valuation as he has a 50/50 agreement with the owner of the land from which it was unearthed.
This is a denarius of Julia Maesa, who was the sister of Julia Domna and grandmother of Elagabalus and Severus Alexander. On the obverse is a draped bust facing right and a legend that reads IVLIA MAESA AVG. On the reverse the standing figure of Pietas holds a box of incense whilst sacrificing over an altar. The legend on the reverse reads PIETAS AVG.
Denarii of this type were struck at Rome between AD 218 and 220. In volume II of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values the type is listed as number 7754.
Valuation
There is a black deposit on part of the obverse but this side is otherwise in VF condition; the reverse is also VF and has no deposit. It’s a pity about the deposit but this denarius should still be worth around £30 to a collector of Roman coins.
