Denarius of Antoninus Pius
Rob Warwick asked for a valuation on this Roman silver coin in order to quote a figure to the owner of the land on which it was found.
The coin is a denarius of Antoninus Pius, whose dates are AD 138 to 161. On the obverse is a bare head of the emperor facing right and a legend reading IMP T AEL CAES HADR ANTONINVS. On the reverse the figure of Victory holds a wreath and a palm branch and the legend on this side reads AVG PIVS P M TR P COS II, which is followed by two more letters that are unclear.
In volume II of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values this type of denarius is listed as number 4058 and dated to AD 139. However, the type does not have the extra letters on the reverse.
Valuation
Rob’s coin would grade VF but it has several striking cracks in the edge. Despite the cracks, it’s still a nice looking denarius and should be worth around £50 to a collector.
