Cut halfpenny of Henry II

The images of this cut halfpenny were sent in by Roger Paul but it was unearthed by a detecting colleague: Ray Piercy.

The coin is a cross and crosslets type penny of Henry II. This is also known as the Tealby type, which was given this name after a very large hoard was discovered there in 1807. Many coins ended up being melted down due to their poor condition.

The standard of production of these coins was amongst the worst in the whole of the English series. Many extant specimens are irregular in shape and badly struck and it’s not unusual for them to have large flat areas.

This example has been carefully struck on a round flan and it would grade VF with good eye appeal. Therefore, it is in far better condition than usual for this type.

With only half of the obverse to work from I cannot pin it down to a class. On the reverse what can be seen of the legend reads AM:ON:. Surprisingly, the four letters allow me to say that the moneyer will be Lanfram and the mint Lincoln.

Valuation

Cut halfpennies sell for good deal less than whole pennies. However, the moneyer and mint have both been identified on this coin and it is in outstanding condition, so my price range would be no lower that £50-70.
