Continental copy of penny of Henry III

John Lashmar asked for a full ID and a valuation of this coin, which appears to be an English voided long cross penny of Henry III.

This is a case in which a find looks to be straightforward but isn’t. The obverse is based upon an early class 5 penny of Henry III. However, the reverse legend, which should bear the name of a moneyer and a mint, is just a jumbled up sequence of letters.

The coin looks to be English and would have passed for an official issue during the reign of Henry III. Despite its convincing appearance, this coin will be a Continental imitation. There is an article in the 1995 edition of the British Numismatic Journal, which focuses on these things. Many different types and varieties are listed in the article but I did not trace an exact match for John’s find.

Valuation

Despite the fact that this will be an unofficial issue, it would still be of interest to specialist in voided long cross coins. A large number is on record but Continental imitations usually sell for prices higher than genuine pennies of Henry III. This example has a tiny edge chip but overall it would grade about VF so my price range would be £70-90.
