Continental copy of Henry III penny
This voided long cross silver penny came in from John Lashmar, who asked for a full ID and a valuation.
At first sight it is an early long cross coin of Henry III. However, rather than being an English coin it is more likely to be a Continental imitation. On the obverse the legend reads hENRICVS REX TERCI, which is the standard reading for Henry III class 2. On the reverse the legend reads NIC OLE ON- LVH. The first letter N looks to be reversed, the letter after ON is a C or an E, and the last letter, which is probably meant to be a letter N, is clearly a letter H.
A very large range of Continental copies of Henry III long cross pennies are known. The early examples, which this coin appears to be, are rarer than the later ones. All are of interest to specialist collectors.
Valuation
The background of the coin is mostly very dark in colour but overall it would grade good Fine to about VF. To a specialist it could be worth around £75.
