Charles I penny
This small hammered silver coin was sent in by Mike Ruczynski but it was found by his brother, John. It’s a Charles I penny, of which there are several varieties.
This coin was struck at the mint in the Tower of London when it was under the control of Parliament. On the obverse is a bust of the king with 1 (the mark of value) behind, all within an inner circle. On the reverse is a shield of arms but this side has no inner circle. The mint mark of both sides is a pellet and in the Standard Catalogue the type is listed under Tower group G.
Valuation
John’s find would grade Fair to Fine and in its present condition it should be worth £12-15.
