“Berkshire Crescents” quarter stater
A detectorist signing himself as Dave sent in the coin pictured here and asked for it to be identified.
The coin is 12mm in diameter and is made of gold so it is an Ancient British quarter stater. On the obverse the cruciform design has opposed crescents in the centre and suns and other symbols in the angles. A triple-tailed horse on the reverse has a cogwheel above, a beaded mane and what has been identified as a small animal below.
In Ancient British Coins a quarter stater of this type is listed as the Berkshire Crescents type (number 908). The type is not included in the Standard Catalogue.
There is some weakness below the horse but the coin is otherwise in about VF condition. This is an excessively rare type of quarter stater, which would certainly be of interest to specialist collectors.
