Charles I penny

The finder of this hammered silver coin asked to remain anonymous. It’s a tiny silver penny of Charles I, which was struck at the mint situated in the Tower of London.

The coin has a figure 1 behind the bust of Charles I, no inner circles and the mint mark is a group of four pellets. The weak areas make it difficult to pin down but it is likely to be type 3a1.

Valuation

The king’s bust stands out well; both sides have been struck off centre but the coin is otherwise about VF for the issue. In its present condition I’d price it at £35 – £40.
