Centenionalis of Constantine II

This is another coin that was sent in by Mike Ruczynski to be identified and valued. It’s another base metal centenionalis but different to the last one.

This coin was struck for Constantine II when he was Caesar under Constantine I. On the obverse is a laureate and draped bust of Constantine, who holds the figure of Victory resting on a globe. The start and end of the legend are both unclear.

On the reverse is a rather crude representation of an altar with VOT IS XX in three lines on the front. Above is a voided cross and pellets and the legend on this side reads BEATA TRANQUILLITAS. The mint letters below the altar don’t show up but the coin will have been struck at Trier.

The exact type isn’t listed in volume V of Roman Coins and Their Values but David Sear mentions that there are many varieties.

Valuation

The obverse is about VF. The reverse is good VF but flat in one quarter. In its present condition I’d price the coin at £8 to £10.
