Billon of Duke Friedrich II of Mecklenburg Schwerin

Mike Ruczynski said this coin was unearthed by his brother, John. It appears to be made of silver and it measures 17mm in diameter.

On the obverse is a crowned letter F, which stands for Duke Friedrich II of Mecklenburg Schwerin. Friedrich was duke from 1756 to 85 and was known as ‘The Pius’ because of his deeply held religious beliefs.

On the reverse, in seven lines, is 1 SCILLING COURANT MECKLENB SCHWERIN MUNZE 1773.

This coin is billon (only .375 parts silver) and being rather small at what value it circulated at in England is a mystery. It might have arrived here through someone who had visited Mecklenburg Schwerin in the 1770s or later.

Valuation

The obverse is a bit scuffed but the reverse is better. It’s not a rare coin so my highest price range would be £7 to £10.
