Anglo-Saxon sceatta, Series X

Here is an Anglo-Saxon period silver sceatta, It was unearthed by Richard Lyon, who asked for further details and a valuation.

On the obverse is a ‘Wodan’ head and on the reverse a creature with its head facing right. This adds up to the coin being an example of Series X, which is listed in the Standard Catalogue as number 797.

Richards find looks as if it would grade about VF. The catalogue price in VF condition is £475 but they can often be bought for half that figure. Therefore, if I was cataloguing this coin for sale at auction I would set the pre-sale estimate at £200 – £220 and would expect it to sell for a figure in that region.
