Ancient British silver minim of the Regni and Atrebates
Mike Ruczynski said this silver coin was unearthed by his brother John on the 25th of this month. I was told that John nearly gave up on the signal as the coin took ages to locate in a muddy field. As it measures only 8mm in diameter it is unsurprising that it took time to pin down.
The greatly enlarged images of the coin show that on the obverse it has EPATI across the centre, with a pellet within a ring above. On the reverse is Pegasus facing right with a cross below.
The preceding information points towards the coin being an Ancient British silver minim of the Regni and Atrebates. In Ancient British Coins it is listed as the Epaticcus Mini Pegasus type (number 1373) and in the Standard Catalogue it is number 363.
Valuation
ABC lists the type as excessively rare. John’s find would grade better than Fine for the type and it is certainly an outstanding rarity. If offered for sale at auction then I’d expect the pre-sale estimate to be set no lower than £180-200.
