Elizabeth I penny

This coin was sent in by Russel Ward. It’s a hammered silver penny of Elizabeth I with mint mark cross crosslet on both sides.

On the obverse the legend reads E D G ROSA SINE SPINA (Elizabeth by Grace of God a Rose Without a Thorn). The legend on the reverse, broken by the arms of the cross on the coat of arms, reads CIVI TAS LON DON.

Valuation

In terms of circulation wear Russel’s find would grade good Fine. However, the reverse has been struck well off centre and this detracts from its overall appearance. As it stands the obverse is quite good but the reverse isn’t, so my price range would be no higher than £35 – £40.
