Penny of David II of Scotland
David Woodhouse had identified this hammered silver coin before he sent it in but he wanted my opinion on what it might be worth.
On the obverse the king’s head faces left and is accompanied by a sceptre with a star on the handle. On the reverse the mint signature is for Edinburgh. Therefore, the coin is a penny of David II of Scotland, whose dates are 1329 to 1321. It was struck during the third coinage (1367-71) and is listed in Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands as number 5130.
Valuation
This penny looks to have circulated for some time as it would grade only about Fine. Both sides have been struck off centre and the type isn’t particularly scarce so my price range would be no higher than £70-80.
