Threepence piece of Elizabeth I
John Watts sent in this hammered silver coin to be identified and valued. I was told that it was 20mm in diameter.
At 20 mm in diameter the coin is a threepence piece of Elizabeth I. The mint mark is an eglantine, which was used on threepences from 1573 to 1577. Unfortunately, the date on the reverse of this coin is not at all clear so I can’t pin it down to a year. From 1573 to 1577 dates were often overstruck and that will be the case with this coin.
Valuation
The obverse would grade nearly VF but the reverse is weak on part of the shield and the last figure of the date. It’s a reasonably attractive coin but with the doubt about the date my price range would be no higher than £70-80.
