Half guinea of George I

The early milled gold coin pictured here was unearthed by Steve Barnett. I was asked for my opinion on its possible value.

The coin is a half guinea of George I. It has the second, older head of King George on the obverse and is dated 1727 on the reverse.

The obverse is slightly scuffed but would grade good Fine. The reverse is better and this side would grade about VF. A significant minus point is its surface. Rather than being a nice golden colour both sides are rather dull.

Valuation

The dull surfaces would put off some collectors but this is still a rare coin, on which a pre-sale auction estimate wouldn’t be any lower than £650.
