Quarter stater of the Durotriges

The images of this coin were sent in by Mike Ruczynski but it was unearthed very recently by a detecting colleague. It’s an Ancient British gold quarter stater, on which I was asked to provide a valuation.

On the obverse the main image is sometimes described as three men in a boat. When turned upside-down it has been compared to the wolf and twins seen on some Roman coins. On the reverse is a zigzag across the centre and what might be meant to represent rays from the sun.

In Ancient British Coins gold quarter staters of this type are listed under the Durotriges as the Duro Boat type (number 2205). However, this specimen has a different reverse to the coin illustrated in ABC and is a very rare variety of 2205.

Valuation

The coin would grade nearly VF but has striking cracks in the edge, which appear quite regularly on Ancient British gold coins. In its present condition my price range would be £250-280.
