Rhuddlan mint penny

The finder of this coin wished to remain anonymous. It’s a voided short cross penny, which the finder had identified as being struck at the Rhuddlan mint but he wanted to know if he was correct.

This penny certainly was struck at the mint situated in Rhuddlan Castle in Wales. The castle changed hand a few times between the English and the Welsh. After being captured by the Welsh in 1213 it remained in their hands until it was ceded to Henry III in 1241.

On the obverse of this penny the legend reads hENRICVS.R EX and the central head is fairly crude. On the reverse there is a cross pommee at the start of the legend, which reads SIMOND ON RVLA. The coin is an example of class iii, which is discussed by Lord Stewartby on page 58 of English Coins 1180-1551.

Valuation

The coin is well struck and it would grade good Fine for the issue so my price range would be £150-180.
