Gold stater of the Corieltavi
Scott Hollingworth said he unearthed this coin last weekend during an organised dig. I was asked to identify this find and give my opinion on its possible market value.
The coin is 18mm in diameter, 6 grams in weight and is and Ancient British gold stater of the Corieltavi. The obverse is blurred but this is a feature of some coins of the Corieltavi. On the reverse is a disjointed horse facing left, which is low down on the flan. There is probably a star under the horse but only one ray shows up. Above the horse is what looks like a crude face wearing glasses.
This exact type is not listed in Ancient British Coins but is a variety of ABC 1743. I traced a similar coin, which was listed as the South Ferriby Owl Eyes type and described as being very rare. In the Standard Catalogue the generic type is listed as number 390.
Valuation
The obverse is blurred, the reverse is VF but off centre so both sides have minus points. However, it’s a very rare variety, for which a specialist should be willing to pay at least £500 in order to acquire it.
