Vale of Pewsey Hoard sells for £81,160

Vale of Pewsey Hoard sells for £81,160

On 17 May 2022, Noonans sold the coins from the Vale of Pewsey Hoard of late Roman silver coins for a total hammer price of £81,160. This was a detecting find from 2020. Full details of the find and the hoard are in my article Noonans to sell the Vale of Pewsey Hoard.

The auction catalogue is available here. There is a buyer’s premium of 24% (plus VAT) on the hammer price.

The total proceeds were double the pre auction estimate. Mr Abbot, one of the finders, said it was the first auction he had been to and he was ‘gobsmacked‘ after watching the prices go up and up.

The auction features coins from thirteen emperors from Constans (337-350) through to Honorius (393-423). I’ve chosen a lot from each one.
