York penny of Edward III
This hammered silver coin was found by Steve Pulley. After being confused about the start/end of the obverse legend, Steve asked for my opinion on his find.
Firstly, this is a York penny of Edward III. On the obverse the legend reads +EDWARDVS REX ANGLIE with saltires as punctuation marks. The cross at the start of the legend has a pellet in each quarter. On the reverse there is a quatrefoil in the centre, the legend reads CIVI TAS EBO RACI and this side also has a saltire as a punctuation mark.
The preceding information adds up to this penny being struck during the post-treaty period (1369-77) for the profit of Archbishop Thoresby. On page 266 of English Coins 1180-1551 Lord Stewarby mentions that the variety with pellets in the initial cross is early and very rare.
Valuation
This coin would grade no higher than Fair but as it is a rarity it would still be of interest to specialist collectors. When it comes to its possible commercial value, my price range would be £25-30.
