Voided short cross penny of Richard I

Ian Fussell said he unearthed this hammered silver coin when he was detecting in East Sussex. After having trouble trying to identify this find Ian asked for my assistance.

The coin is a voided short cross penny of Richard I, which has characteristics that mark it out as a coin of class 4a. On the reverse the legend reads +GOLDWINE ON. No mint is given on the reverse and this makes the coin quite rare. However, a moneyer named Goldwone was an official at only one mint: Canterbury. Therefore, even though the mint signature is missing we know where the coin was struck.

Valuation

Ian’s find is a decent example of the reign, class and mint and overall it would grade Fine. In its present condition the price range to a collector would be £60 to £70.
