Voided short cross penny of King Richard I
This is the first item from a small group of finds sent in by Marcin Koper. It’s a voided short cross penny of King Richard I and is an example of class IVa.
The obverse would grade better than Fine for the issue. The reverse isn’t as good and it has been struck off centre. Translating the legend wasn’t easy but I eventually worked it out as +OSBERN ON WINC, so Osbern is the moneyer and Winchester the mint.
Valuation
Overall the state of preservation isn’t particularly good but at least it isn’t the more usual London mint. In terms of value, in its present condition I would price the coin at £45.
