Voided short cross cut halfpenny

A detectorist who preferred to remain anonymous said he unearthed this hammered silver coin on 8 April whilst searching a new permission somewhere in Cumbria. The find isn’t in good condition but I was asked to provide a fill ID.

The coin is a voided short cross cut halfpenny. On the reverse I can see ON LVN, so the halfpenny started its life at the mint situated in London.

Sadly, I cannot pin it down to a reign. There is a stop between ON and LVN, so it will date between Henry II and John but that is as much as I can say for certain.

If a hammered silver coin has turned up on a new permission then it is likely that more will be found during future searches.
