John Garner asked me to identify and place a value on this voided short cross cut halfpenny.
On the reverse what remains of the legend reads ON LV, so this coin was struck at the mint in London. There is a single letter before ON, which will be the last one in the moneyer’s name but it doesn’t show up. There is not enough detail visible on the rest of the coin for me to be able to pin it down to a reign and type.
A couple of generations since cut voided short cross cut halfpennies were quite scarce but over the intervening years detectorists have unearthed tens of thousands of examples, so today they are quite common. John’s find is in good condition but my highest price estimate would be only £2 – £3.
