Threepence piece of Elizabeth I

This is the second find sent in this week by Barry Williams. This one is a hammered silver threepence piece of Elizabeth I.

The coin is dated 1566 on the reverse and has mint mark portcullis on both sides. For 1566 there are two mint marks: lion and portcullis. However, Barry had not been able to trace portcullis for this date so he asked if it was rare. The mark is on record for 1566 but it is quite rare.

Valuation

The reverse of Barry’s find has a couple of weak areas but is otherwise in good Fine condition. The obverse is slightly better. In its present overall condition I’d price the coin at £90.
