Sixpence of Elizabeth I
This Elizabethan hammered silver coin came in from Steve Hurst, who asked for a full ID and a valuation. I was told that it is 25mm in diameter so it must be a sixpence.
Steve said he couldn’t make out if the last digit of the date was 7, 8 or 9. It is actually an 8with a flat top, which is the standard type for 1578. The mint market the start of the legend on both sides is a Greek cross.   Â
Valuation
This sixpence would grade about VF for the issue but has unsightly staining to the edge on both sides, which reduces its eye appeal. Without the staining I’d have said more but with it my price range would be no higher £60 to £80.
