Silver penny of Charles II
Steve Bartlett always gives his landowners a rough idea of the value of everything he unearths on their land. This coin is one of his latest finds, on which I was asked for my opinion on its possible commercial value.
The coin measures only 12mm in diameter but is shown greatly enlarged. It’s a silver penny of Charles II, which has mint mark crown on the reverse only and a letter I (for the mark of value) behind the bust of the king on the obverse. Therefore, this penny is an example of the undated milled coinage of Charles II and is listed in the Standard Catalogue as number 3389.
Valuation
This little coin would grade nearly VF and is the first of its type I have seen as a detecting find. However, this is a case of a coin that is fairly common out of the ground but rare as a detecting find. In terms of commercial value, to a collector it should be worth £25-30.
