Siliqua of Theodosius I

Mike Ruczynski is the detectorist who unearthed this Roman silver coin. I was asked to provide Mike with a full ID and a valuation.

On the obverse, facing to the right, is a diademed and draped bust of the emperor and a legend that reads D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG. On the reverse is the seated figure of Roma, who hold a transverse spear with one hand and a globe with Victory perched on top in the other hand. Below Roma are the mint letters (TR PS) for Trier and the legend on this side reads VIRTVS ROMANORVM. All this adds up to the coin being a siliqua of Theodosius I (AD 379-95).

In volume V of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values this siliqua is listed as number 20459. This type was struck at Trier from AD 388 to 395.

Valuation

On the obverse there is slight weakness on the hair and diadem of Theodosius but the coin is otherwise in VF condition with no defects. In its present condition a likely pre-sale auction estimate on Mike’s coin would be £120 to £150.
