Short cross type penny of Cnut
This coin came in from Damon Ward, who said it was a very recent fine. I was asked to provide full details, including a valuation.
The coin is a short cross type penny of Cnut. On the reverse the legend reads +AEGELMER ON LINC, so Aegelmer is the moneyer and Lincoln the mint.
Valuation
The type isn’t particularly scarce for Cnut (there were over 4,000 specimens in the Lenborough hoard) but any Anglo-Saxon penny counts as a good find.
Both sides of Damon’s find are discoloured and weak in places and the reverse has been struck off centre. However, all the main details show up and despite the defects just mentioned this coin should still be worth £150 to £180 to a collector.
