Shilling of Elizabeth I

This is the last find from the group of four sent in by Marcin Koper.  It’s a hammered silver coin of Elizabeth I but rather than being one of the low denominations so often unearthed by detectorists it is a shilling.

The mint mark on both sides is a tun, which dates the coin to 1592-95. For those who don’t already know, the dictionary definition of tun is: a large beer cask or a measure of capacity, usually equal to 252 wine gallons

Valuation

The reverse has been struck slightly off centre but is otherwise in about VF condition. On the obverse the portrait of Elizabeth is quite good but there are scratches in front of it and the second half of the legend is weak. It’s a reasonably decent specimen but has some points that aren’t in its favour, so my price range would be no higher than £120 – £150.
