Sestertius of Marcus Aurelius
Keith Waudby told me he was thinking of parting with the large Roman base metal coin pictured here so he wanted a rough idea of its possible commercial value.
The coin is a sestertius of Marcus Aurelius. On the obverse a laureate head of the emperor faces right and is accompanied by a legend that reads IMP M ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXIV. On the reverse, in five lines within an oak wreath, is PRIMI DECEN NALES COS III S C.
This variety isn’t listed in volume II of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values. However, in Roman Imperial Coins it is number 1006.
Valuation
The obverse legend is weak in places but the coin is otherwise in near VF condition, with decent surfaces and none of the edge chips so often seen on large Roman coins that have been in the soil. In its present state of preservation a likely pre-sale auction estimate would be £150-180.
