Quarter stater of the Trinovantes and Catuvellauni

The finder of this Ancient British gold coin signed himself as Julian. He said that after searching the internet he had been unable to trace an exact match.

The coin is a quarter stater of the Trinovantes and Catuvellauni. On the obverse is a corn ear with A to the left and MV to the right. On the reverse is a horse facing right with CVN below; above is a large pellet surrounded by five small pellets, one of which is very weak.

In Ancient British Coins (this is by far the best general reference work on the series) various types are described and illustrated on page 137. However, ABC does not include an example with a group of pellets on the reverse as described above. It is worth mentioning that some other varieties of full and quarter staters of the Trinovantes an Cauvellauni are not mentioned, presumably because they only turned up after ABC was published.

Valuation

The obverse of this quarter stater is VF, the reverse good VF. I have not traced another with the group of pellets as described above so it is obviously a rare variety. If I was cataloguing the coin for sale at auction I would set the pre-sale estimate at £450-550.
